Deep, cold water is what lake trout like. Great Slave Lake is one of the largest and deepest lakes in the world, creating a paradise habitat for giant lake trout. Spring-time action is non-stop with many fish in the 5-10 lbs. range, with trophies in the 20–30 lbs. range being found. In mid-summer, the lake trout begin to move deeper, and the giants are more easily targeted making this time of year best to catch larger trout.

The size and numbers of northern pike in YK Bay and North Arm is world class, and often overlooked by anglers. This area produces average fish of 5-15 lbs. and big females reaching 30-40 lbs. It is not unheard of to land 150 northern pike in a day, with multiple fish over 36 inches. Great Slave Lake has all of the elements to produce giant pike: plenty of water with little fishing pressure and abundant forage fish species. The fish also have a short growing season, which allows a higher weight average then most other fisheries to the south. If you are looking for a toothy encounter with a big fish then DNA can help you land that trophy!

Found only in the World’s most oxygenated, clean rivers and streams, arctic grayling is a prized fish to target on a fly rod. The Northwest Territories holds the present World Record for this species, and often produces fish pushing this record. Casting small nymphs and or big dries for this species will offer an unforgettable experience to a fly angler.

Walleye angling on Great Slave Lake is another overlooked fishery. Overshadowed by the abundant lake trout, walleye are here in large numbers and a healthy average size. YK Bay and the North Arm can produce some great fish to fry up over a fire for lunch.
